[Inspirational Monday] Permission to Pivot

Permission to Pivot: Why Changing Your Mind is a Superpower, Not a Weakness

As the year winds down, a certain kind of pressure begins to mount. It’s the pressure of the un-ticked boxes, the goals not quite met, the grand vision that still looks a little blurry. For entrepreneurs and creators, this can feel like failure. We are taught to be persistent, to have grit, to push through no matter what. But what if the smartest, most courageous thing you can do for your brand isn’t to push harder in the same direction, but to grant yourself permission to pivot?

A pivot is not the same as quitting. Quitting is stopping the journey. Pivoting is choosing a smarter road to the same destination—or, sometimes, realizing there’s a better destination altogether. It is a strategic course correction based on new information, market feedback, and a deeper understanding of your own strengths. In a world that changes at lightning speed, the ability to pivot is not a sign of weakness; it is your greatest superpower.

Consider the story of Netflix. They didn’t start as the global streaming giant we know today. They began in 1997 as a DVD-by-mail rental service, a direct competitor to the behemoth, Blockbuster. For years, that was their identity. But as technology evolved, they saw the future wasn’t in plastic discs, but in digital streams. In 2007, they made a monumental pivot, launching their streaming service. At the time, it was a risky move that cannibalized their existing business. Blockbuster, meanwhile, doubled down on its physical stores, viewing streaming as a niche. We all know how that story ended. Netflix pivoted and became a titan. Blockbuster was so rigid it became a relic.

Your end-of-year review shouldn’t just be about measuring success; it should be an honest audit of your direction. Ask yourself the hard questions:

What drained my energy the most this year? Often, the tasks that drain us are the ones that are misaligned with our core mission or strengths.

Where did I get the most unexpected, positive results? Pay attention to the happy accidents. Sometimes your audience will show you a more profitable or fulfilling path than the one you originally planned.

If I were starting my brand from scratch today, what would I do differently? This question frees you from the baggage of past decisions and allows for radical honesty.

Changing your mind isn’t a sign of indecisiveness. It’s a sign of intelligence. It means you are learning, listening, and adapting. It means you are more committed to the long-term success of your vision than you are to the short-term comfort of your original plan.

So as you look towards 2026, don’t just ask yourself how you can work harder. Ask yourself how you can work smarter. Give yourself the grace to let go of what isn’t working and the courage to embrace a new direction. Your biggest breakthrough might be just one pivot away.
