Super Eagles Set for High-Stakes World Cup Playoff Showdown Against DR Congo
Nigeria’s Super Eagles will take on DR Congo in a decisive playoff final for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after both teams secured dramatic victories in Rabat to reach the last stage of the African qualifiers.
DR Congo sealed their place with a narrow 1-0 win over Cameroon at the Stade El Barid. With the match seemingly drifting toward extra time, captain Chancel Mbemba delivered a clutch finish in the first minute of added time, calmly steering in Brian Cipenga’s corner. His late strike stunned the Cameroonian bench and eliminated the five-time African champions.
The loss means Cameroon—Africa’s record World Cup participants—will miss the expanded 48-team tournament. Their qualification hopes had already dimmed after surrendering the automatic ticket to Cape Verde, who are set to make their first-ever World Cup appearance.
Earlier, Nigeria booked their place in the playoff final with a commanding 4-1 victory over Gabon at the Moulay Hassan Stadium. The Super Eagles appeared to have the game wrapped up when Akor Adams scored in the 78th minute, but Mario Lemina equalised late with a deflected effort that forced extra time.
Nigeria quickly regained control in the added period. Chidera Ejuke restored the lead with his debut goal for the national team, before Victor Osimhen stepped up with a decisive brace to seal the win.
Both nations now shift focus to Sunday’s all-important clash in Morocco. The winner will advance to a six-team intercontinental playoff in Mexico in March 2026, where the final two slots for the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will be decided.
