Italian Fans Rally Behind Lookman After Heated Clash With Atalanta Coach Juric

Italian football supporters have come to the defence of Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman following a heated touchline confrontation with Atalanta manager Ivan Juric, which overshadowed their 1-0 Champions League victory over Marseille on Wednesday night.

Although Lazar Samardzic’s late goal secured the win at the Stade Vélodrome, it was the tense exchange between Lookman and Juric that grabbed post-match headlines.

The incident occurred in the 75th minute when Lookman—who had earlier had a goal ruled out for offside—was substituted. As he made his way to the bench, Juric appeared to grab him by the arm, pulling him back in frustration. The visibly irritated Lookman responded verbally before staff intervened to diffuse the situation.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the disagreement reportedly continued after the final whistle, even as teammates celebrated their victory.

The episode sparked widespread debate. On CBS Sports, former Watford striker Troy Deeney condemned Juric’s actions, saying:

“Once you put your hands on someone, that’s it — there’s no coming back from that. Nothing you say can undo that moment.”

Co-pundit Nigel Reo-Coker echoed the sentiment, stressing that Juric had crossed a line:

“As a manager, you simply can’t do that. You’re on live TV, representing your club. The moment you put your hands on a player, you’ve lost.”

Fans online also voiced support for Lookman, with many on Football Italia’s comment sections criticising Juric’s behaviour. One fan wrote, “Lookman didn’t deserve that,” while another added, “Not a good look for a coach.”

ACL Sports publisher Calvin Onwuka went further, slamming Juric’s conduct:

“You grabbed a player you just substituted, and in front of the whole world? That’s unacceptable. Lookman should make a stand — one of them has to go.”
