ASUU Suspends Strike After Reaching Understanding with Federal Government

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its strike following renewed agreements with the Federal Government on key issues affecting Nigeria’s public universities.

ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the suspension during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday. He explained that the decision came after a series of meetings between the union and a government delegation led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, with additional mediation from the National Assembly.

The union had embarked on a warning strike on October 13, 2025, to protest the government’s delay in finalizing the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, along with other concerns about lecturers’ welfare and the condition of university education.

During the industrial action, both parties held talks on October 16 and 18 to review and fine-tune the proposed agreement. Although ASUU noted that not all its demands had been met, it acknowledged that there had been meaningful progress since the strike began.

After its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held between October 21 and 22, the union resolved that the strike had achieved its goal of drawing the government’s attention back to the negotiation table. Consequently, ASUU opted to suspend the strike to enable further dialogue in a more conducive atmosphere.

Prof. Piwuna commended the Senate Committees on Tertiary Education and TETFund, Labour, and the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, for their mediation efforts. He also expressed gratitude to students, parents, the media, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and other Nigerians for their solidarity during the standoff.

However, ASUU cautioned that the Federal Government must utilize the one-month window to address all outstanding issues, warning that failure to do so could lead to a resumption of the strike without further notice.
