UEL Thriller: Manchester United Make History with Stunning Comeback Against Lyon
Manchester United pulled off a historic and breathtaking comeback to defeat 10-man Lyon 5-4 after extra time in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
With this dramatic win, United advanced to the semi-finals with a 7-6 aggregate victory.
Trailing 4-2 deep into extra time and staring down elimination, the Red Devils found an incredible late surge, scoring three goals in just 11 minutes. Kobbie Mainoo leveled the tie with a strike in the 120th minute, and Harry Maguire sealed the victory moments later with a dramatic last-gasp winner.
United’s heroics etched their name in European football history, becoming the first team ever to score twice in the 120th minute of a major European competition.
The game had an electric start, with Lyon taking the lead through Manuel Ugarte in the 10th minute. Diogo Dalot equalized right before the halftime whistle, making it 2-0 to United at the break.
Lyon responded in the second half, clawing their way back as Corentin Tolisso scored in the 71st minute, followed by an equalizer from Nicolas Tagliafico. But the momentum shifted again when Tolisso was sent off in the 89th minute after receiving his second yellow card, reducing Lyon to 10 men.
Despite the disadvantage, Lyon surged ahead in extra time. Rayan Cherki scored in the 105th minute, and Alexandre Lacazette converted a penalty in the 110th, making it 4-2 and putting United on the ropes.
But United refused to back down. Bruno Fernandes pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 114th minute, Mainoo leveled the score in the 120th, and just when the match looked destined for a penalty shootout, Maguire rose to the occasion and clinched the win in the final moments of added time.
It was a night of relentless drama, unforgettable moments, and a comeback that will be remembered for years to come.
