Lagos Shuts Down 13 Markets in Ketu, Mile 12 Over Persistent Illegal Waste Disposal
The Lagos State Government has sealed 13 markets across the Ketu and Mile 12 areas due to ongoing violations of the state’s waste management regulations.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the enforcement action via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday morning. According to Wahab, the closure followed repeated infractions, including the indiscriminate dumping of waste on roads, medians, and highways—actions that contravene the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.
He stated that the enforcement took place Thursday night and emphasized its importance in protecting public health and restoring order to the state’s overcrowded public areas.
“In line with our commitment to environmental sanity, Ketu and Mile 12 markets were sealed last night for repeated violations, including illegal waste disposal,” Wahab wrote. “These enforcement actions are essential to safeguard public health and reclaim our public spaces. Market stakeholders must begin to take responsibility for proper waste management.”
He called on all market operators to cooperate with the state in building a cleaner and more responsible Lagos.
Markets affected include the notorious Erukan Market in Mile 12 and Oja Oba Market in Ketu. Others sealed include Owoseni Tundas Market, Oba Ogunjobi Market, and multiple business locations such as the shops at the BRT Terminal in Mile 12, Mile 12 Bus Stop Shops, and the six-plaza Ketu Terminal Market.
Additional closures were carried out at the Ifesowapo Shop Owners Market (Mile 12), Demurin Street Plaza Shops (Ketu), 6 Demurin Road (Ketu), Ifelodun Market (Ketu), Ibadan Unit 1 Park (between Babajide Sanwo-Olu Market and Ikosi Fruit Market), and the Ketu Tipper Garage.
