China Hits U.S. Imports with 84% Tariff Amid Growing Trade Tensions

China Imposes New 84% Tariffs on U.S. Imports Amid Escalating Trade Tensions

China has officially enacted a new round of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports, imposing an additional 84% duty starting Thursday. The move comes in direct response to Washington’s decision to intensify trade pressure, with President Donald Trump announcing plans on Wednesday to hike tariffs on Chinese goods to 125%.

Chinese authorities have firmly rejected the U.S. approach, accusing Washington of economic blackmail and vowing to stand firm in the ongoing trade dispute.

As tensions with the U.S. mount, China is actively seeking to strengthen ties with other international partners. On Tuesday, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao held a phone conversation with EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, during which they discussed ways to enhance China-EU economic cooperation.

A statement from Beijing criticized the U.S. tariff strategy as detrimental to global trade and underscored the importance of a rules-based multilateral trading system. Both sides agreed to initiate discussions on improving market access and the business climate for companies operating between the two economies.

China continues to be a key trading partner for the European Union, ranking as the EU’s third-largest export market and its largest source of imports in 2024. Despite this, the EU ran a significant trade deficit with China last year, amounting to approximately €300 billion ($329 billion).

Meanwhile, China has temporarily suspended tariffs for select other countries. As of now, Beijing has not issued a formal response to the latest U.S. tariff hikes.
