South Africa Blocks Starlink Investment Following Elon Musk’s Controversial Remarks
South Africa has rejected the establishment of Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service, citing concerns over CEO Elon Musk’s controversial statements. Officials described Musk’s comments as “regressive” and “racially insensitive,” prompting the decision to halt Starlink’s entry into the country.
The move comes after a public clash between Elon Musk and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa over the nation’s land reform policies. Musk criticized the Expropriation Act, alleging it enforces race-based discrimination in property ownership.
In response, Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya rejected Musk’s claims, stating that the government would not engage with investors spreading “falsehoods” and divisive rhetoric.
Negotiations between Starlink and South African officials, which aimed to expand satellite internet to underserved areas, have now been suspended indefinitely.
Despite initial hopes that Starlink could help bridge the digital divide, growing tensions between Musk and the government have diminished prospects for future collaboration.
President Ramaphosa defended the Expropriation Act as a legal tool for equitable land redistribution, stressing that it does not allow indiscriminate land seizures but aims to correct historical inequalities.
Despite Musk’s criticisms, South Africa remains committed to its land reform agenda and is engaged in ongoing diplomatic discussions with the United States on the matter.
