Dangote Group Poised to Take a Leading Role in Transforming Nigeria’s Automobile Industry with Expanding Car Production Capabilities
Dangote Group, a leading Nigerian conglomerate, is strengthening its presence in the nation’s automobile sector, particularly in the passenger car and commercial vehicle markets.
Having secured the franchise for Peugeot and Sinotruck brands, Dangote has been rolling out models from its Kaduna (Peugeot) and Lagos (trucks) plants. In a major step toward industry dominance, Dangote Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (DPAN) has begun assembling the Peugeot 3008 GT at its Kaduna facility, alongside other models.
This milestone reinforces DPAN’s commitment to reviving the Peugeot brand in Nigeria, which was once the country’s most popular vehicle brand in the 1970s and 1980s. The 3008 GT, featuring a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, joins DPAN’s lineup of locally assembled vehicles, including the Peugeot 301 Sedan and the seven-seater Peugeot 5008 SUV.
DPAN has also introduced the Peugeot Landtrek 4×2, a rear-wheel-drive pickup truck powered by a 2.4-litre engine, marking its entry into the light commercial vehicle segment.
According to Umar Isa-Kaita, DPAN’s Chief Commercial Officer, the company is in discussions with auto firms to expand its Peugeot sales and after-sales network by accrediting dealerships nationwide. This initiative aims to improve vehicle accessibility and enhance after-sales support for customers.
DPAN’s Managing Director, Ibrahim Isa Gachi, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to expanding its lineup, following the successful launch of the Peugeot 301 in January 2022. With its Kaduna plant capable of assembling 120 vehicles per day, DPAN is well-positioned to restore Peugeot’s former prominence in Nigeria’s automotive market and revitalize the industry amid ongoing challenges.
