Lagos Expands Intelligent Transportation System to Enhance Traffic Management and Road Safety
The Lagos State Government has introduced four additional Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) sites across key locations to improve your road safety and traffic management. The initiative was announced on Thursday by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during a press briefing at Alausa, Ikeja.
Osiyemi stated that the expansion aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of a smarter and safer Lagos, integrating advanced technology to enhance traffic monitoring and enforcement. The ITS will operate alongside Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and Traffic Management Solution (TMS) devices to curb road violations and reduce accidents.
New ITS Sites for Speed Detection and Traffic Monitoring
The newly deployed ITS locations will focus on speed detection and traffic violation monitoring:
- Speed Detection Checkpoints:
- Alapere, Ogudu Road (Speed limit: 80km/h)
- Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way (Speed limit: 60km/h)
These checkpoints aim to curb over-speeding, a major cause of road accidents in the state.
- E-Police Sites for Traffic Violations:
- Allen Avenue Road Junction
- Nurudeen Olowopopo Road
These sites will monitor offenses such as running red lights, lane violations, illegal U-turns, and reverse driving on highways using high-definition cameras.
Technology-Driven Traffic Management for a Smarter Lagos
Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Tunbosun Alake, highlighted that the initiative, in collaboration with the private sector, is part of the government’s broader strategy to make Lagos a technologically advanced and livable city. He emphasized that leveraging technology in traffic management would enhance safety and support socio-economic growth.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Olawale Musa, clarified that while traffic violators will be fined, the initiative is not punitive but aims to encourage compliance with traffic laws and correct bad driving habits. Motorists who break traffic regulations will receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) detailing their offenses and corresponding fines.
“This system is not about punishment but about fostering responsible driving behavior. Our goal is to save lives, protect property, and create an orderly transport system,” Musa said.
Key Benefits of the ITS Expansion
The Lagos State Government outlined several benefits of the ITS, including:
- Enhanced road safety by discouraging reckless driving.
- Improved traffic flow through real-time monitoring and enforcement.
- Data-driven policy decisions for better urban planning.
- Increased transparency by minimizing human interference in traffic enforcement.
The government urged all road users, including private motorists, commercial drivers, and transport unions, to adhere to traffic regulations by observing speed limits, obeying traffic signals, maintaining lane discipline, and avoiding dangerous maneuvers such as reversing on highways.
This initiative represents another step toward transforming Lagos into a modern, efficient, and technology-driven city with safer roads for all.
