Data Consumption Surges Despite Economic Downturn

Nigerians used a total of 973,445 terabytes of data in 2024.

Between December 2023 and the same period in 2024, Nigerians consumed a staggering 973,445 terabytes of data, bringing substantial revenue to mobile network operators despite rising operational costs.

This massive data consumption was driven by 139.2 million internet users during the period under review. The surge highlights Nigerians’ growing reliance on digital technology and mobile communications. However, the increase in data usage occurred despite a shrinking number of internet users, as economic challenges made data less affordable for many.

According to data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), internet users in the country dropped from 163.8 million in December 2023 to 139.2 million a year later, marking a loss of nearly 25 million users.

A reliable source at NCC attributed this decline to the enforcement of SIM-NIN linkage regulations and internal data corrections by telecom operators. The impact extends beyond internet access, with active phone connections plummeting from 224.7 million to 164.9 million, leading to a significant drop in teledensity.

Despite this decline, data consumption surged by 36%, rising from 713,200 terabytes to 973,445 terabytes. This suggests that while fewer people are online, they are using significantly more data, likely fueled by increased engagement in streaming, gaming, and remote work.

Notably, 4G technology has surpassed 2G for the first time, now accounting for 42.7% of internet users, while 5G adoption, though still in its early stages at 2.3%, is showing growth. This shift indicates a rising demand for faster internet speeds among connected users.

While the surge in data usage may seem to offset concerns about declining internet users, industry experts warn that Nigeria’s digital ambitions could face setbacks if this trend continues. The sharp decline in internet users threatens the country’s goal of achieving 70% broadband penetration by the end of 2025.
