At just 16 years old, Gout Gout has established himself as a rising star in athletics. The South Sudanese-born Australian sprinter recently stunned the world by running the 200m in an extraordinary 20.04 seconds at the Australian Schools Championships in Brisbane. This incredible performance earned him the title of the fastest 16-year-old ever to complete the distance.
Gout’s record-breaking feat didn’t just cement his place in the annals of track and field history—it also shattered the 1968 Olympic record set by Peter Norman. His time now stands as the second-fastest 200m ever recorded by someone under 18, trailing only Erriyon Knighton’s remarkable 19.84-second run at 17 in 2021.
Reflecting on this monumental accomplishment, Gout shared…
It’s pretty crazy. Right now I can’t process it, but I guess tonight when I go to bed, I’ll think about it. These are adults. And me, I’m just a kid, and I’m running them (down).
I’ve been chasing that record, but I didn’t think it would come this year. I thought it would come maybe next year, the year after that.
Gout Gout, who will celebrate his 17th birthday later this month, recently showcased his exceptional talent by running the 100m in a blistering 10.04 seconds, making it the fourth-fastest time ever recorded by an Australian sprinter.
Standing tall at 6ft 2in, Gout’s remarkable speed and effortless running style have drawn comparisons to the iconic Usain Bolt. With his eyes set firmly on the future, Gout is already gearing up for the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, where he aims to compete at his peak at the age of 24.
