Osun State Sues MTN for N1 Billion

The Osun State Government has filed a N1billion lawsuit against MTN, accusing the telecommunications company of defamation over the publication of allegedly false information about the state. The case, with suit number HOS/99/2024, is currently being heard at the Osun State High Court.

Morenike George-Taylor of Global Transactions Nigeria Limited, the state government’s sole consultant on telecommunications infrastructure, disclosed that a separate legal case has also been initiated against MTN for violations of the Osun State Environmental Protection Law 2022. She further revealed that the issue has been reported to the Osun State Police, with a petition pending investigation.

George-Taylor highlighted that despite ongoing disputes over an outstanding payment of N945 million owed by MTN to the Osun State Government, reports indicate that individuals continue to lay MTN cables in the state.

In response to these developments, the state has sent letters to the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Federal House of Assembly, and notified the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). These actions aim to establish a significant legal precedent related to the Critical National Infrastructure Bill, passed in June 2024.

George-Taylor emphasized that telecommunications companies cannot evade their tax responsibilities by exploiting legal loopholes.

As the case progresses, Osun State remains determined to hold MTN accountable, ensuring compliance with local laws and seeking justice for its grievances.
