RUTH SIMMONS
Ruth Simmons made history as the first African American president of an Ivy League institution, leading Brown University from 2001 to 2012. Her journey from a sharecropper’s daughter in Texas to one of academia’s highest positions demonstrates the power of education and determination.
Under her leadership, Brown underwent significant positive changes, including the strengthening of academic programs and the introduction of need-blind admission. She established the Committee on Slavery and Justice, making Brown one of the first universities to examine its historical ties to slavery.
Simmons continues to advocate for educational equity and excellence. Her work has opened doors for future generations of leaders in higher education, showing that barriers can be broken through persistence, excellence, and vision.
