[SPORT] Super Eagles Sealed Qualification for AFCON2025

Super Eagles of Nigeria sealed top spot in group D of the AFCON 2025 Qualifiers and Participation at the Tournament is secured

Nigeria clinched the top spot in Group D of the 2025 AFCON qualification series after a 1-1 draw with Benin Republic at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on Thursday. Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, currently on loan, secured a point for Nigeria with an 81st-minute header after Benin had taken an early lead with a first-half header.

This result brought Nigeria’s total to an unassailable 11 points, confirming their qualification for the tournament in Morocco. Their advancement was also aided by Libya’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali earlier that day.

Prior to facing the Cheetahs in Abidjan, Nigeria had not conceded a goal in the qualifiers. However, they were breached in the 16th minute when defender Mohamed Tijani scored with a header through Stanley Nwabali’s legs following a well-executed corner kick, putting Gernot Rohr’s team ahead.

Osimhen had an opportunity to equalize before halftime but missed the target with a header off a Bruno Onyemaechi cross, squandering Nigeria’s best chance of the first half.

Former Super Eagles coach Rohr sought to outwit his former side, and the Cheetahs came close to extending their lead on multiple occasions in both halves.

Nigeria were fortunate to have conceded only one goal in the match. Their breakthrough came through Osimhen’s header, a more challenging effort than his earlier miss, While it wasn’t the Super Eagles’ most polished performance, the draw was enough to secure the top spot in Group D. Benin Republic remains in contention with seven points, followed by Rwanda with five points and Libya with four, all vying for the final qualification slot.

Nigeria will conclude their group stage campaign against Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Monday, with nothing at stake but pride. Conversely, Rwanda will be eager to cause an upset and snatch the last qualification spot. Meanwhile, Benin will travel to face Libya in the group’s other match.
