[UNIQUE PERSONALITY] DR. MAE C. JEMISON

DR. MAE C. JEMISON

Dr. Mae C. Jemison broke barriers as the first African American woman in space. Aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992, she conducted experiments in life sciences and material sciences, advancing our understanding of how humans adapt to space.

Before NASA, Jemison earned degrees in chemical engineering and medicine. She served as a Peace Corps Medical Officer in Sierra Leone and Liberia, demonstrating her commitment to global health care.

After NASA, Jemison founded technology companies and educational programs. The 100 Year Starship initiative, which she leads, works to make human travel beyond our solar system possible within the next hundred years. She continues to inspire young people, especially women and minorities, to pursue careers in science and technology.
