Gitanjali Rao, born in 2005, is a remarkable young inventor, author, and science promoter who has made significant strides in using technology to tackle social problems. In 2020, at just 15 years old, she became the first-ever ‘Kid of the Year‘ named by TIME magazine, recognizing her extraordinary achievements and potential.
Rao’s journey as an innovator began early. At age 11, she developed Tethys, a device using carbon nanotubes to detect lead in drinking water, inspired by the Flint water crisis. This invention earned her the title of America’s Top Young Scientist in 2017. She didn’t stop there. Rao went on to create Epione, a device for early diagnosis of prescription opioid addiction, and Kindly, an app using AI to detect cyber-bullying.
What sets Rao apart is not just her inventions, but her dedication to inspiring other young minds. She has conducted innovation workshops for thousands of students globally, encouraging them to use science and technology for social good. Her book, “A Young Innovator’s Guide to STEM,” aims to inspire young people to pursue innovation.
Rao’s work has been recognized with numerous awards, including being named to Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list in 2019. She has spoken at multiple TEDx events and global forums, sharing her vision for youth-led innovation.
