[EXHIBITION] NATIONAL ARTS THEATRE

The National Theatre of Nigeria stands as an architectural and cultural icon, majestically towering over Iganmu in Lagos. Shaped like a military hat, this 31-meter-tall edifice spans 23,000 square meters, serving as a multipurpose hub for preserving, presenting, and promoting Nigerian arts and culture.

Constructed by the Bulgarian company Technoexporstroy, the National Theatre’s design was inspired by the Palace of Culture and Sports in Varna, Bulgaria. Its inception was spearheaded by General Yakubu Gowon’s regime, and the complex was officially inaugurated by General Olusegun Obasanjo in 1976, just months before the historic FESTAC ’77 – the 2nd World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture.

Since its establishment, the National Theatre has hosted a myriad of international music concerts, dramas, film shows, symposia, exhibitions, workshops, and even sports events. It has provided a grand stage for Nigerian and global artists to share their experiences and cultural expressions.

Significant events like Beyoncé’s “Black is King” video filming and Burna Boy’s Grammy-nominated performance have further cemented the National Theatre’s iconic status. As a rallying point for artistic expression, it continues to inspire and unite artists, fostering cross-cultural exchange and celebration of Nigeria’s rich heritage.
