Born in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, Jude Abaga, popularly known as M.I. Abaga, hails from Takum, Taraba State, with a rich Jukun-Nigerian heritage.
His musical journey began at Baptist High School in Jos when his mother introduced him to basic music notations and a 7-key mini piano. With influences ranging from Lauryn Hill to DMX, M.I. discovered hip hop early on.
After attending Calvin College in Michigan, USA, where he dabbled in poetry, business, and economics, M.I. delved into the hip hop scene. He gained recognition at Calvin College’s ‘Hip Hopera’ in 2003, securing a third-place finish.
Awards quickly followed, with Modemen Awards and Hip Hop World Awards recognizing his talent.
M.I.’s impact on the Nigerian and African music scene is undeniable, marked by his achievements like Best New Act at the MTV Africa Music Awards (2009) and multiple wins at the Hip Hop World Awards. From his debut album “Talk About It” to later projects like “The Chairman,” M.I. Abaga remains a trailblazer, winning accolades for his lyricism and contributions to African hip hop.
His legacy continues, urging fellow artists to fix up their lives and leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s vibrant music industry.
